Monday, November 7th, AT 4: Two nights ago I finally got my starter off and out, I went had it tested, it was bad. Bought a new one, took it back to my car, got underneath, and realized there were more than two wires that needed to be hooked back up to the starter. It was so dark the night before I did not see how many were connected to the big bolt. After searching for a couple hours online, I never found out what these wires were or which ones go where. Finally I gave in.

Wiring & Electrical; Shop All Electronics; Car & Truck Alternators and Starters Your vehicle’s battery supplies power to the starter. The starter solenoid and the starter spin the engine to get it started. An alternator then tops off the battery’s charge and powers all of your electrical accessories while the vehicle is running. When one of.
Starter How Engine Starters Work Easy to follow guide describing how an automotive engine starter motor works, this information pertains to most vehicles. A starter motor is used to rotate an engine to begin the combustion process. A flex plate or flywheel is connected bolted to the rear of the crankshaft, these unit are fitted with a ring gear which enables the starter to be activated.
If the flywheel is worn it can cause a grinding noise when the starter is operated. Starter and Flex Plate Main starter motor power is supplied directly from the positive side of the battery via the positive battery cable. This circuit supplies electricity to the starter solenoid which then activates the motor portion of the unit. Starter Trigger Wire A starter is made up of two separate parts, the solenoid which is used to activate the electric motor, and to push the starter bendix gear into the ring gear.
Some vehicles have the solenoid mounted on the fender or near the battery. Starter Motor and Solenoid Once the starter motor engages the starter bendix senses the armature momentum and is forced to extend into the flywheel.

This particular model 10SI, used in the s and early 80s is the one you’ll find on the generation of GM cars most often used in demolition derbies. It was also used in a lot of off-road equipment, so they’re generally cheap and easy to find. These instructions also apply to the 12SI series, which is similar but can be distinguished by the water-pump style cooling fan on the front flat front instead of individual fins.
This is the main power wire that goes directly to the battery. Make sure it is a heavy gauge since it has to carry the full output of the alternator up to amps. The leftmost of the two spade connectors around the perimeter of the alternator will sometimes be marked “1”. This is the field wire that energizes the alternator; without it, the alternator won’t start charging.
It must be switched, or else it will drain the battery overnight.

But if you insist on using an amp meter, here’s the information. The most important feature of the amp meter is that it is a low resistance high current device. It must be installed in series with an electrical load to limit current flow. If you were to wire the amp meter directly across the battery as you would with a volt meter the amp meter would immediately pass so much current as to fry the meter, almost instantly.
Some amp meters may actually be fused for internal protection.
May 12, · I am building a custom club car with a 8 HP Cushman motor and wish to install a Mando clockwise rotating 12 Volt 25 amp generator-starter on it. I have the battery, solenoid and voltage regulator installed, but am stuck with 5 poles on the Mando (DF, A1, A2, F1, F2).

The next step up is a full-on racing battery. Electricity requires a ground in order to flow. The power side of the wiring receives all the attention, but the ground wiring is just as important. A bad ground can cause all sorts of mysterious troubles. Start by grounding the battery negative to the chassis.

Telephone For those states or countries that require a ‘lights on’ driving situation, don’t touch the actual glass of the bulb. One side of the condensor should be unsoldered. I would recommend the side opposite the HT turret on the slip ring. Primary low tension resistance as measured from the amrature core to the wires that you just unsoldered shuld be approximately 0.
Secondary high tension resistance measured from armature core to slip ring brass should be – Ohms. With everything connected up just depress the cutout contact for a few seconds. This will direct charge from the battery around the field windings and re-magnetise the field magnets with the correct polarity. Walridge Mtrs list a 6 volt black rubber original style p. They can be reached at E-mail: A lot of spare time on his hands after putting Ettiene in the crib in the workshop, they train them the right way in France!
Work was then done in producing some prototypes, using several different methods of drive ,and speeds. Unfortunately One of the early prototypes was seen on a French bike by a British journalist, and publicity was given , long before any real development had been carried out. I was flooded out with enquiries from all over the World.
Bendix thread Inertia system An inertia type starter: The pinion is not fixed rigidly to the motor shaft – it is threaded on to it, like a freely turning nut on a very coarse-thread bolt. Imagine that you suddenly spin the bolt: When an inertia starter spins, the pinion moves along the thread of the motor shaft and engages with the flywheel gear ring.

Contact Author Source Most people have never heard of a solenoid, and when their vehicles start having electrical problems, they automatically assume that the battery or the starter is dead. Very possibly, it could have been the solenoid. A solenoid is just a coil of wire that’s wrapped around a hollow non-magnetic core. It receives an electric current from both the ignition switch as well as the battery. The small electric current from the ignition switch forces the solenoid to clamp together a pair of heavy contacts.
This allows the large electric current from the battery to flow to the starter and turn over the engine. Generally, when a solenoid is broken, the two metal clamps won’t operate anymore to complete the circuit, making it impossible for power to flow from the battery. Diagnosing a Problem If your car won’t start and you’ve changed your battery or jumped it, and if there’s no sound at all out of the starter when you turn the key, then it’s a good bet that your solenoid is bad.
Depending on the solenoid, you may or may not be able to test it. It’s job is simple: So when it’s broken, it no longer is able to connect the battery to the starter. So testing is just a matter of bridging the connection and allowing power to flow from the battery to the starter. If you have a metal tool with a rubber handle, you can touch both of the posts with the metal, thus bridging the connection and allowing power to flow.

You can see by the inset that the old pinion gear was pretty badly chewed up. After some checking back and forth between the spare starter and what I had assembled, I had Wildflower’s starter back together and ready to install right. I set about getting it back in place. Thirty minutes later I was no closer to getting it in and was saying bad words.
Yes, even worse than ‘Triumph’! It took just the right angle to get the starter out, and I will have rediscover that angle to get it back in. I have cleaned up and am going to give it another shot later this week. It is one of a series of ‘favourite motor car stories’ published in , and tells teh story of a ‘Mr. Greyhair’ who has gotten too old to drive, and must pass his TC along to a collector. Rather interestingly, the hero of the piece is a Model A Ford, while the villain is a modern Rolls.
I think I was more offended that the drawing of ‘Mr. Greyhair’ looked a lot more like me than that of the young mechanic! I need to get Wildflower’s starter together – I have been holding for a new MGB exhaust donut to augment the flat copper exhaust manifold gasket, but have it on hand now. The old starter was much larger, and had a very different Bendix system above right.
